Used Suits

Buying used suits is a great way to look good and save money at the same time. Many people worry that a preowned suit will not look as well or hold up as long as a new suit will. This scenerio however is usually not something the average person will have to worry about.

Many people selling suits that they no longer wear did not wear the suit that much in the first place. For instance a person will buy a suit for interviews and will end up getting a job they keep for many years. This suit is not worn to work every day and thus is left in the closet for a few years while the owner slowly outgrows it.

The above situation leads the person to sell the suit which works out well for both you and the seller. You get an almost new suit and they get some extra cash for their trouble.

While it may be difficult to find a suit in the brand, color, and style you like at the exact same size, it usually isn't difficult to get close. As long as the suit has enough room to be altered, you can buy the suit and take it to a tailor.

For information on what can and can't be altered on a suit, see my page on suit alterations.

In addition to buying pre-owned suits directly from a seller, you can also get them from places like GoodWill, the Salvation Army, and many other thrift stores. Sometimes these suits will have their sizes listed and other times they will not.

It is a good idea to try these suits on and to check to see if they have extra material on them. If the suit has already been heavily altered, you may not be able to alter it back very well.

For your convenience, you may just want to go ahead and check out a decent Ebay seller. Sellers will usually measure the suit out and tell you exactly what the measurements are.

They will also steam clean the suit, so you'll save money by not having to take it to the cleaners. I used to find it funny that I sometimes got used suits for less money than it cost to get them dry cleaned.
