What Color Suit Should You Choose

What Color Suit Should You Choose?

How does one decide what color suit to buy or wear when most men don't have a clue what looks best? The overwhelming majority of suits are produced in just three color: Black, Dark Grey and Dark Blue.

Black is often thought of as being the color to wear either at the office or church. However, with the right shirt it can look incredibly smart and trendy in a social environment.

Dark Grey is best worn as a business suit as it creates an air of authority. This suit will be flattered by almost any color shirt.

Dark (Navy) Blue tends to be a bit "average". You will blend-in with the crowd in a Navy Blue suit, something you may, or may not wish to do. That said, it's safe to wear for virtually any occasion. If you are fair skinned you will need to wear a darker colored shirt.

Other Colors. Brown has rarely been considered a suitable color suit for the business world. Men's suits in brown are usually reserved for social wear along with tweed jackets etc.

White can look fantastic in the correct setting or occasion (think Tom Hanks in the movie "Big"). However, the words "correct setting or occasion" cannot be emphasized enough, so think carefully. As such, purchasing a white suit somewhat limits it's usefulness.

Lighter Grey suits are best worn in warmer climates or in the summertime. Looks great with almost any pastel shirt, unless you are reasonably fair skinned, in which case something slightly bolder should be considered.

So you really need to take a few factors into consideration when deciding what color is best. Decide when you will be wearing the suit. Is it mainly for business or social use. Does it suit my complexion and do I wish to stand out and be noticed, blend in or hide?

Don't forget, regardless of what color suit you desire, you need to feel good in your choice. You can only feel good if you know you look good. You can only truly know you look good if told. Therefore, consider taking along your partner or someone who will offer you an honest opinion. When I needed to buy a really good suit, I took along my wife. The moment I first tried on the suit I went on to buy, she instantly KNEW it was the right choice. Consider it. It's not a bad place to start.
